Managing non-target wildlife mortality whilst using rodenticides to eradicate invasive rodents on islands

چکیده
Invasive rodents are one of the greatest threats to island biodiversity. Eradicating these species from islands has become increasingly practicable in recent decades, primarily using anticoagulant rodenticides. However, this approach also poses risks native wildlife, and there been corresponding development management non-target wildlife species. Here we review strategies tactics used operational risk, examples rodent eradication projects conducted on 178 where risk assessment mitigation was a component campaign. We identified 17 different within framework three strategic approaches: avoidance minimization remediation impact mortality. summarize terms their applicability, strengths, weaknesses for general, plus potential interactions with achieving eradication. There remains great further innovation reducing rodenticide invasive eradications islands, supporting advancement social acceptability toolset biodiversity conservation.

Exposure pathways of anticoagulant rodenticides to nontarget wildlife.
Second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides are widely reported to contaminate and poison nontarget wildlife, primarily predatory birds and mammals. Exposure pathways, however, have not been well defined. Here, we examined potential movement of rodenticides from deployment of bait to exposure of small mammals and other biota. At two adjacent working farms, we placed baits containing either bro...

Software measures are of paramount importance to evaluate both processes and products. However, collecting such data requires a large effort and this activity produces benefits only in the long term. For these reasons, companies have to use automated tools able to collect data without affecting both the productivity and the process. This approach is useful to reduce the effort related to the me...
متن کاملEffectiveness of rodenticides for managing invasive roof rats and native deer mice in orchards.
Roof rats (Rattus rattus) and deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) are occasional pests of nut and tree fruit orchards throughout California and in many other parts of the USA and beyond. In general, the most practical and cost-effective control method for rodents in many agricultural environments is the use of rodenticides (toxic baits), but little or no information exists on the efficacy of cur...

Non-native plant invasions can change communities and ecosystems by altering the structure and composition of native vegetation. Changes in native plant communities caused by non-native plants can influence native wildlife species in diverse ways, but the outcomes and underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, we review and synthesize current information for the Intermountain West of th...
متن کاملPoisoning of wildlife with anticoagulant rodenticides in New York.
From 1971 through 1997, we documented 51 cases (55 individual animals) of poisoning of non-target wildlife in New York (plus two cases in adjoining states) (USA) with anticoagulant rodenticides--all but two of these cases occurred in the last 8 yrs. Brodifacoum was implicated in 80% of the incidents. Diphacinone was identified in four cases, bromadiolone in three cases (once in combination with...
